Steeped in history, the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) is a living plant museum that inspires people to appreciate, study, and conserve plants to enrich society locally and globally. More than 200 years ago, George Washington had a vision for the capital city of the United States that included a botanic garden that would demonstrate and promote the importance of plants to the young nation. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1820, the U.S. Botanic Garden is the oldest continuously operating botanic garden in the United States. Since 1934, it has been administered through the Architect of the Capitol.

The United States Botanic Garden is a fantastic place for families with kids. Everything is beautifully maintained, and the different plant rooms are kept at just the right temperature, which makes walking through the tropical areas especially exciting for children it truly feels like a mini jungle adventure. Kids will love seeing the colorful flowers, towering plants, and unique medicinal plants from around the world. There are plenty of signs and displays that are easy to understand and spark curiosity, making learning feel fun rather than like a lesson.
The staff are incredibly friendly and patient, always willing to answer children’s questions and explain things in a way kids can understand. That personal interaction really makes the experience memorable and educational. This is a calm, safe, and engaging environment where kids can explore, ask questions, and connect with nature, while parents can enjoy a relaxing and enriching visit. It’s an excellent hands-on learning experience and a perfect family outing in Washington, DC.
